Papercraft prototype

Image
I decided to create my object based on an elephant planter I own. For the elephant base I created a hollowed bowl shaped body and added legs and a face. In the final version I would like to add cacti and/or some foliage, I was also clear to me once I created the paper prototype of the body that I would need to scale up the entire thing in order for the smaller, more complex parts like the trunk to turn out better looking and more structurally sound.

Papercraft research- Li Hongbo

Image
Li Hongbo is a Chinese artist who designs and creates malleable sculptures using layers of glued paper that when manipulated, can distort and bend the piece in unexpected ways.      The reason I chose to review his artwork in particular is because I believe that it showcases the full artistic range and possibilities of paper as a medium. The sculptures take full advantage of the many unique properties of paper, including its malleability, weight, thickness, smoothness and delicate nature. I would go as far as to say that this type of artwork can only be created using paper. It takes an incredible amount of understanding and experience with a specific medium to be able to use it in such a way, which speaks to Li Hongbo's hard work and expertise as a paper sculptor. His dedication and patience is clear considering it takes several months to finish a piece. The artwork itself is fascinating because it is subject to an infinite different ways of bein...

Mesh Mashup: Concept generation

Remix culture is somewhat inherent in almost all artworks in my opinion. While intentional remix artwork is usually easy to spot and define there is an element of subconscious remixing in all art creation. I am referring to influence, borrowed concepts, tropes, reoccurring symbols, etc. Intentionally remixed elements can be thoughtful as well as arbitrary in my opinion, which can be observed in some of my creations where I chose to let instinct guide some of my decisions.  Fossil fuels.  Bed bug! Pretty self explanatory. Alternative to the bed bug. Cheese with tentacles. I liked the way the tentacles looked coming out of the cheese holes. Loosely based on a debate a friend and I were having about cream cheese in sushi. Personally I dislike the combination of cheese and seafood and this mashup comically emphasizes that. Monster cake. In this alternative the cake is the monsters body instead of the tentacles coming from inside the food item.  I watched the Last Of Us ...

Objectified response: My Love Recliner

Image
After watching Gary Hustwit's documentary, I decided to create a sofa based off of designer Hella Jongerius's concept of giving individual character and quirk to something produced industrially. I decided to not limit myself with a concept I found little inspiration in (since I do not actually need to worry about selling this thing) but I did also consider simplification and de-cluttering certain elements. The headrest is adjustable and it would theoretically be made of dyed leather and wood. I fully understand this sofa is not to the tastes of the general public, however in my mind that makes it more special to the portion of people who would find it's retro tackiness endearing, and therefore makes it more valuable than a regular sofa in the right situation.
